SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1.0 Rules
1.1 Races will be governed by
(a) The Racing Rules of Sailing as revised up to the time of the event, except as changed by these
Sailing Instructions;
(b) the prescriptions of Yachting New Zealand (YNZ);
(c) these Sailing Instructions, including changes made in compliance with instructions 2 and 3.
(d) the Notice of Race for the Pompeys Pillar Race and the Peraki Race;
(e) For races within Akaroa harbour
The YNZ Safety Regulations Part II, Category 5 (Keelers).
The YNZ Safety Regulations Part IV, Category C (Trailer Yachts and Sports Trailer Yachts).
2.0 Notice to Competitors
Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located at the Clubhouse.
3.0 Changes in Sailing Instructions
Any change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted before 1000 hours on the day it will take
effect, except that any change to the schedule of races will be posted by 1000 hours on the day
before it will take effect.
4.0 Signals Made Ashore
4.1 Signals made ashore will be displayed at the Clubhouse.
6.0 Schedule of Races
6.1 Racing is scheduled as detailed in the Sailing Programme.
8.0 Racing Areas
Unless specified by Notice of Race, the area is Akaroa Harbour.
9.0 The Courses
9.1 As detailed in the Sailing Programme.
9.2 The race committee may shorten a course by nominating any rounding mark as the last mark of
the course. Boats shall then finish by rounding that mark on the required side and crossing the
finish line from the direction of that mark. Nomination of the last mark will be broadcast on VHF
channel 77 before the lead boat has reached that mark. This modifies rules 32 and 33 and Sailing
Instruction 13.1. Code flag 'S' is replaced by displaying a GREEN light.
10.0 Marks
10.1 Mark 1 will be an orange spherical buoy with a green, or orange or both flags, all other marks will be orange spherical
buoys.
10.2 The starting/finish line will between the flagpole on the Clubhouse Tower and Mark 1. Boats will leave Mark 1 on the side specified in the course description..
11.0 The Start
11.1 Races will be started by using the following signals.

or any alternative starting system as notified by the club.
This instruction changes Rules 26 and 30.
11.2 For Mark Foy starts only, each boat is solely responsible for starting at its allocated time without
starting signals. Rule 29.1 is modified by substituting the word “signal” with the word “time.”
Boats may be given a verbal 30 second warning signal via VHF Channel 77.
Rule 29.2 and Rule 29.3 do not apply.
11.3 Individual Recall.
Code flag 'X' is replaced by displaying of RED light with one sound signal.Rule 29.2 is modified by adding, after the last sentence, the words “Affected
boats names or numbers may be broadcast on VHF channel 77”.
11.4 General Recall.
Code flag “First Substitute” is replaced by dispplaying RED and GREEN lights with two sound signals. After a general recall, the warning signal
for a restart will be made one minute after the recall signal lights are extinguished. This changes Rule 29.3.
11.5 A boat starting later than ten minutes after its starting signal will be scored Did Not Start (DNS).
This changes Rule A4.1.
14.0 Postponement
14.1 Postponement signal Code flag AP is replaced by displaying of RED and ORANGE lights. The warning signal for the Start wil be one minute after the postponement signal lights are extinguished.
14.2 Race Abamdonment will be signaled by displaying of RED, ORANGE and GREEN lights. This replaces Code flag 'N'.
15.0 Time Limits
15.1 The race time limits shall be:

15.2 Boats failing to finish within 150% of the time of the first boat to sail the course and finish, will
be scored Did Not Finish (DNF). This changes Rules 35 and A4.1.
16.0 Protests and Requests for Redress
16.1 Protest forms are available at the Clubhouse. Protests and requests for redress shall be delivered
there before the protest time limit.
16.2 The protest time limit is 60 minutes after the last boat has finished the last race of the day.
17.0 Scoring
17.1 The minimum number of starters for any race shall be 3.
17.2 The Low Point scoring system of Rule A4, as changed below, will apply.
Each boat’s series score, (except the Pentax, Two Handed and Easter Series), will be the total of
her race scores, with her worst score discarded if four or more races have been completed.
Line Honours Trophies scores shall be calculated on the same series and shall not include “Fastest
Times” from Mark Foy starts in the same series.
17.3 A boat that did not finish shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number
of starters or 10 points, whichever is the greater. A boat that did not start, retired after finishing
or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place two more than the number of
starters or 10 points, whichever is the greater. This instruction changes Rule A4.2.
18.0 Safety Regulations
18.1 Each boat intending to race shall check in either by registering on the form at the starter’s box, or
by requesting check in by the starter, and receiving acknowledgment, via VHF channel 77, prior
to the warning signal.
18.2 A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee as soon as possible (notification via
VHF channel 77, as preferred.
18.3 A boat racing between sunset and sunrise or in times of restricted visibility shall show Navigation
Lights as required by the Maritime Rules: Part 22 - Collision Prevention Section 2 and YNZ Safety
Regulations: Part II 11.7 and Part IV 10.3.
20.0 Safety and Equipment Checks
Any boat or equipment may be checked for compliance with the applicable Safety Regulations at
any time. On the water, a boat can be instructed by a race committee member to proceed immediately
to a designated area for compliance checks. Any boat found to be non-compliant may have its
entry rescinded and/or face disqualification from the race.
25.0 Radio Communication
Race Management broadcasts race information on VHF Channel 77. All competing boats should
keep watch on this channel.
26.0 Prizes
Unless categorized as an open event, prizes and trophies will be awarded only to boats that are
skippered by full members of the Akaroa Cruising Club.
27.0 Disclaimer
Competitors participate in races entirely at their own risk. Attention is drawn to Rule 4, Decision
to Race. Akaroa Cruising Club will not accept any liability for personal or material damage, injury
or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after any race organised by Akaroa
Cruising Club.
